Alice In Wonderland 1933

After spending Sunday night at Skip's doing the AVGeeks home version, I was reminded of how I have aways wanted a copy of the haunting 16mm version from Paramount of Alice In Wonderland that was shown to us periodically throughout elementary school. The above particular set of scenes, to me, has remained with me all my life. Halfway thru, once Alice is in the house, the actions and costumes of the cook and nanny and child scarred me. I was sure everytime I saw this scene that the nanny was going to break the child's neck. (Billy Barty was uncredited as the baby, btw)

"Speak roughly to your little boy and beat him when he sneezes. He only does it to annoy because he knows it teases. Wow Wow Wow!" Creepy...

Tomorrow Is Hog-Killing Day!

Winter used to be hog killing time for farm families in Eastern North Carolina, but few people raise, kill and dress their own pigs anymore.

To show how it used to be done, the Tobacco Farm Life Museum in Kenly is holding its annual hog- killing day demonstration and dinner Saturday. Starting at 8 a.m., volunteers will demonstrate how to cut out the meat, dry skins and lard, press cracklins', salt hams and make sausage.

"It's an old-timey, dying art," said Elaine Richardson, acting director of the museum.

The demonstration is free; plates of chicken pastry, hot cracklins', hog hash, baked sweet potato, collards, hush puppies, sweet tea and desserts will be available starting at 11:30 a.m. for $10.

Hog killing days were often communal events, with several families sharing the work and the bounty and celebrating with a big meal. In this case, the killing will take place in advance, Richardson said.

“When we get the hog, he will already be deceased,” she said.

KK Donut Run Tomorrow

Krispy Kreme Challenge Set for Saturday

The Mint

The Mint's extravagant interior

rtuwtf.com's review or I Can't Fit My Bling In My Thong

"..The review of The Mint mentions that the City of Raleigh gave the restaurant group $1-Million to invest in the interiors. Well, it sounds as though the million dollars is really visible in the interior design, literally. Reading about The Mint reminds me of foreboding scenes in films like Wall Street: the money is flowing, it’s raining diamonds and then you start to feel some apprehension; this can’t last, something bad is about to happen and you can feel it.

Well, flip through the N&O to the business section and look at that stock market graph and the blurb about heading into a recession. Will we look back in a few years and wonder: “Remember when people used to wear T-shirts about money and then they built that restaurant about money?” Ah, these are the days!"

Let My People Go

Well, Crap...

Hideaway BBQ closed

This is where Sean and I went for our New Year's hoedown. Southern Culture On The Skids were making their last NC appearance (well, duh) and I rarely catch them nowadaze. And who wouldn't want to ring in the New Year with Moonshine and Fried Chicken at Midnight?? Well, maybe you, but not me! The crappy part is that I've been putting off for who-knows-why going to sit and eat their BBQ. My goal is to eat a BBQ sandwich in every NC restaurant that claims to serve real pit bbq and render my results. Damn. I missed the boat on this since they've now stopped serving food altogether and when we went on NYE, the kitchen had stopped taking orders before we arrived in order to prepare for their midnight feast of fried chicken. (For old SCOTS fans, you may remember they would often throw chicken and biscuits into the audience, so the feast was fittin').
Fortunately, no future shows were cancelled, they were simply moved to either The Berkeley or Lincoln Theater.

10,000,000,000 Gallons

10 billion gallons, thats how big Falls Lake’s current deficit is, almost 70 percent down from its healthy levels, seen as recently as early 2007. The council has asked that we limit our use to 35 gallons a day- but has been unable to generate support for a water rate hike. Many are conserving more and we are all familiar with traditional water conservation techniques- but the shortage hasn’t really affected any of us directly. Sure, some small businesses have had to find alternative sources for water, and many of us have gloved our green thumb, but 10,000,000,000 gallons? Start saving. One wonders how far it will have to go for folks to drastically change their behavior. Mr Lane has some deeper analysis of the science of it all here.

Me and My Shadow

Here's an excerpt from Rob Brezny's *PRONOIA IS THE ANTIDOTE FOR PARANOIA:
How the Whole World Is Conspiring to Shower You with Blessings*:

SHADOW SCHOOL

You're a gorgeous mystery with a wild heart and a lofty purpose. But like
all of us, your psyche also harbors a portion of the world's sickness: a
mess of repressed longings, enervating wounds, ignorant delusions, and
unripe powers. It has been known by many names, including demon and
devil. Psychologist Carl Jung called it the shadow. He believed it was the
lead that the authentic alchemists of the Middle Ages sought to
transmute into gold.

*

"I am superior to you only in one point," Narcissus tells Goldmund in
Hermann Hesse's novel Narcissus and Goldmund. "I'm awake, whereas you
are only half awake, or completely asleep sometimes. I call a man awake
who knows in his conscious reason his innermost unreasonable force,
drives, and weaknesses, and knows how to deal with them."

*

Astrologer Steven Forrest has a different name for the shadow: stuff.
"Work on your stuff," he says, "or your stuff will work on you." He means
that it will sabotage you if you're not aggressive about identifying,
negotiating with, and transforming it.

*

"You have to recognize the demons or else they'll annoy you like
mosquitoes. But if you acknowledge their existence, if you say, 'All right,
here's a cookie, go sit in the corner,' then you can go about your work
and you don't have to go into depression because of it." --James
Broughton, as told to interviewer Jack Foley in The Alsop Review, "Big
Joy: Octogenarian--An Interview with James Broughton,"
http://tinyurl.com/k4ech

*

"The unconscious sends all sorts of vapors, odd beings, terrors, and
deluding images up into the mind; for the human kingdom, beneath the
floor of the comparatively neat little dwelling that we call our
consciousness, goes down into unsuspected Aladdin caves. There not
only jewels but also dangerous jinn abide: the inconvenient or resisted
psychological powers that we have not thought or dared to integrate into
our lives." --Joseph Campbell, *The Hero With a Thousand Faces*

*

The shadow is not inherently evil. If it is ignored or denied, it may become
monstrous to compensate. Only then is it likely to "demonically possess"
its owner, leading to compulsive, exaggerated, "evil" behavior.

*

"Whatever is rejected from the self, appears in the world as an event,"
said Jung. If you disown a part of your personality, it'll materialize as an
unexpected detour.

Everyone who believes in the devil is the devil.

*

"Nothing determines who we will become so much as those things we
choose to ignore." --Sandor McNab

*

"There is no generally effective technique for assimilating the shadow. It
is more like diplomacy and is always an individual matter. First one has to
accept and take seriously the existence of the shadow. Second, one has
to become aware of its qualities and intentions. This happens through
conscientious attention to moods, fantasies, and impulses. Third, a long
process of negotiation is unavoidable." --Daryl Sharp, Jung Lexicon: A
Primer of Terms and Concepts; also available at http://tinyurl.com/znxn3

*

"The shadow is not only the dark underside of the personality. While much
of it consists of inferior, primitive, unadapted, and awkward qualities, it
also contains vitalizing instincts, sleeping abilities, and positive moral
qualities that have long been buried or never been conscious. These
unacknowledged personal characteristics are often seen or hallucinated in
others through the mechanism of projection." --Daryl Sharp, Jung Lexicon:
A Primer of Terms and Concepts; also available at
http://tinyurl.com/znxn3

*

"The best political, social, and spiritual work we can do is to withdraw the
projection of our shadow onto others." --Carl Jung

*

"Suffering can't be avoided," James Broughton told Jack Foley. "The way
to happiness is to go into the darkness of yourself. That's the place the
seed is nourished, takes its roots and grows up, and becomes ultimately
the plant and the flower. You can only go upward by first going
downward." --James Broughton, as told to interviewer Jack Foley in The
Alsop Review, "Big Joy: Octogenarian--An Interview with James
Broughton," http://tinyurl.com/k4ech

*

The alchemists said the magic formula for enlightenment was Visita
Inferiora Terrae Rectificando Invenies Occultum Lapidem, or "Seek out the
lower reaches of the earth, perfect them, and you will find the hidden
stone" (the treasured Philosopher's Stone). Jungian psychologists might
describe the process this way: Find the ignorant, wounded parts of your
psyche, perfect them, and you will awaken your hidden divinity.

*

"The great epochs in our lives are at the points when we gain the courage
to rebaptize our badness as the best in us." --Friedrich Nietzsche

*

In the best-known version of the Greek myth, Persephone is dragged
down into the underworld by Hades, whose title is "Pluto." But in earlier,
pre-patriarchal tales, she descends there under her own power, actively
seeking to graduate from her virginal naiveté by exploring the intriguing
land of shadows.

"Pluto" is derived from the Greek word plutus, meaning "wealth."
Psychologist James Hillman says this refers to the psyche-building riches
available in Pluto's domain. Hades, he says, is "the giver of nourishment to
the soul."

*

The goddess Hecate also lives in the underworld. According to poet
Robert Graves, she is the mistress of sorcery, "the goddess of ghosts and
night-terrors, of phantoms and fearful monsters." On the other hand, he
notes, Hecate "presides at seed time and childbirth; she grants
prosperity, victory, plentiful harvests to the farmer and rich catches to
the fisherman."

How can a single deity embody such seemingly contradictory archetypes?
Graves: She symbolizes "the unconscious in which beasts and monsters
swarm. This is not the living hell of the psychotic, but a reservoir of
energy to be brought under control, just as Chaos was brought to cosmic
order under the influence of the spirit."

*

In the New World, it won't be your material wealth that will win you the
most bragging points. Nor will it be the important people you know or the
deals you've swung or the knowledge you've amassed or your mate's
attractiveness. What will bring you most prestige and praise in the
civilization to come will be your success in transmuting lead into gold--
how thoroughly you have integrated your shadow and tapped into its
resources.

*

Here's a corollary to Jesus's injunction to love thy neighbor as thyself: "I
will love the dark, difficult side of my neighbor--not just the attractive,
friendly side--and I will encourage it to express itself in constructive
ways."

*

"If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere
insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate
them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and
evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to
destroy a piece of his own heart?"
--Alexander Solzhenitsyn, *The Gulag Archipelago*

Ancient legend says that a giant cobra--normally a fearsome predator--
shielded Buddha with its expansive hood as he meditated in the wilderness
during a terrible week-long storm.

Laughing Owl Farm

Charlotte Observer article part 1
part 2

interesting recent newsletter:

Rather than moving the rolling hen house weekly, setting up a new enclosed 56' X 16' pasture area, and covering it with flight netting, as we have done all year; we have gone lazy and low-tech. Taking our chances and letting the hens and roosters out around 10 AM to roam and range wherever they want in the upper garden area for the last two weeks.

I planted a dozen white pine seedlings next to the road about 8 years ago that are now about 15 feet tall and the chickens love hanging out under them.

They are all over my dad's cattle pasture and are happily destroying some over the hill patches of arugula.

I noticed that a few of the brussel sprout plants on the end of the rows have been stripped naked and I see that they are diligently eating the rye and vetch cover crop seeds I sowed a week and a half ago and that suits me just fine.

Best I can tell, we have only had one predator casualty. One little red hen was bound and determined to go free-ranging early and found a way out onto open pasture before I let them out and apparently became breakfast for an owl. Or would it be supper since owls work 3rd shift? She had talon marks on her back and her head was missing and that is what owls do.

I have no idea what hawk poop looks like but I do know owls excrete pellets and being the curious sort and wanting to give you an answer on why owls would only eat the chicken's head, I did a google. Whoa! Owl pellets are not excreted but regurgitated bits of hair, fur, bone, etc...

There is a website called owlpellets.com that sells pasteurized owl pellets. Apparently, you really can sell anything on the internet...

Their motto is: "We provide the very best Owl Pellets at the very best prices. Try us and you will agree. " Prices do not include shipping and handling

I've been reading Dean Mullis' farm diary for about a year now and am glad to see they've been recognized in the CLT Observer.

THE COOLEST CAMP ON WHEELS READY TO ROLL!

Danville, Virginia – December 28, 2007 - "Campers! Start your engines!" are the words eagerly anticipated by enrolling campers as registration for the 2008 season opens at Camp Motorsport, a one-of-a-kind race car driving summer camp for kids ages 10-16. "The kids have such a great time, and we are so excited to be able to open our doors to even more participants this year" says Camp Director, Diane Tyrrell, referring to the expanded season being offered in 2008. "Beyond the need for speed, we really are all about transforming the lives of youth through the camp experience. We use racing as a tool in teaching skills that campers will use in life, long after their session of camp is over. What the kids take away from this experience in terms of personal growth and development is so very powerful, we want to make sure we have room for everyone who wants to come."

Camp Motorsport is a unique fusion of racing with life-skills development and traditional summer camp activities. "Although we have driving curriculum and instructional staff that rival top professional driving schools, what we are doing here goes much deeper than the experience behind the wheel" says Tyrrell.
And the horsepower driving the camp experience does go beyond the racing instructional environment.
"At camp, we have a really strong focus on teambuilding. Racing is a team sport, and the success of the driver depends on how well the entire team works together. Cooperation, learning how to develop relationships and how to work closely with others is not only key to racing success, but also to success in life." The resident camp experience also helps kids learn to take responsibility for their actions, decision making, building independence, and learning respect for self and others. "We use four-wheels-and-a-seat as a tool to helping kids develop positive character traits" shares Tyrrell.

While at camp, campers use applied hands-on math & science, like figuring out how resistance and drag impact the aerodynamics in making the car go faster. "We provide opportunities for campers to convert abstract math & science concepts in to hands-on applications. This is especially helpful for kids who struggle with the type of instruction used in a traditional classroom, as our real-life approach allows for many kids to finally "get it", and can be a motivator for when they return to school in the fall." Camp Motorsport also has a strong commitment to helping children learn to be responsible citizens of the natural world through their racing technology-based environmental education program. Through these activities, campers explore such topics as alternative fuels, fuel efficiency, and applied science to better use resources and protect the environment.

While at camp, campers participate in daily hands-on driving instruction and racing education, at the live racetrack environment of VIRginia International Raceway. In addition to driving and racing-related activities, campers enjoy all of the fun activities of a traditional summer camp, such as campfires, fishing, sports, swimming, etc. "With a program this amazing, you can see why we don't want any child to miss out!" shares Tyrrell.

Children enrolling for Camp Motorsport attend for one-week sessions, and live on-site at VIRginia International Raceway, nestled on 1300 acres of rolling hills & woods, complete with fishing pond, swimming pool, playing fields, and outdoor fun in the Virginia countryside, near Danville Virginia. Campers live in air-conditioned bunk-style rooms, and meals are served buffet-style, from kid-tested menus. Driving instruction is designed to help participants become a better, safer driver for life, with instruction that rivals the best professional racing schools. No prior driving experience is required to attend. All equipment, meals, & lodging are included in tuition. Camp Motorsport is accredited by the American Camp Association.

The north wind made the Vikings. ---Scandinavian saying

In the immortal words of Donald Rumsfeld: “Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns — the ones we don't know we don't know."

It would be a pity to waste this influence on any of its negative manifestations, because it really does give you an opportunity to make yourself over according to your ideals. You can undergo a total spiritual regeneration and achieve a greater understanding of yourself and your place in the universe. And your relations with others will be an integral part of the process. Each new meeting and even encounters with old friends and loved ones will show you more about the path of development that you should take.
